The Soumakh weaving technique produces a weft-faced flat woven fabric. The wefts or horizontal threads are passed over two or three warps (vertical threads) and back under one or two. The technique can be either structural (for strength) or supplementary (for design); this type of weaving is referred to as Soumakh brocading.

Hali offer an excellent range of Soumakh rugs or flat weaves illustrating how this technique produces a robust texture reminiscent of embroidery, and although many such rugs are invariably very well woven our examples rise above the norm by virtue of the muted colours and wonderful drawing.

NOTE: An unusual feature of a Soumakh rug is that they are totally reversible.
