The name ‘Art Nouveau’ is derived from an interior design gallery opened in Paris in 1896 called the Masion de l’Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau is an international style of decoration developed during the 1880’s through to the commencement of the 1st World War in 1914. Art Nouveau and all avant-garde movements of this period were a reaction to the rigid academic and historical point of view at the time. This ‘new art’ signalled the end to the 19th century and was the first new decorative style of the 20th century.

Art Nouevau is heavily influenced by the abstraction and linearity of Japanese and Medieval motifs. All designs have emphasis on the primacy of line and stylization of natural forms. Hali designed rugs have sought to achieve the perfect integration of central scenes within elaborate borders which combine medieval and celtic interlacing with a Japanese approach to spatial arrangement. The floral elements in Art Nouveau designs are derived from recognisable plant species yet formed to become part of the decorative structure.

At Hali we have produced an exclusive range of exquisite handmade carpets which captures the bold freshness of design and colour unique to the Art Nouveau movement.
